International Women’s Day Q&A – Leah Mason & Philippa Priestley
In honour of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Leah Mason, Senior Consultant, and Philippa Priestley, Senior Consultant, to understand what this day means to them. Their insights were truly inspiring and a reminder of the progress we continue to make, while recognising there’s still more to be done.
1. Why is it important to continue recognising and celebrating IWD in today’s world?
Leah: Recognising International Women’s Day remains important as gender inequality persists in many areas, including the workplace, education, and politics. It raises awareness of ongoing issues such as the gender pay gap, discrimination, violence, and lack of representation in leadership roles while honouring the crucial contributions women have made throughout history. It fosters global solidarity, uniting people across cultures and backgrounds in the shared mission of creating a more inclusive and equal world.
Philippa: It is important to promote gender equality, highlight women’s achievements, and address ongoing challenges like discrimination, violence, and the gender pay gap.
2. What are some barriers women still face in the workplace?
Leah: Women are underrepresented in leadership roles, which reduces their influence in key decision-making processes. Their opportunities are further limited by restricted access to mentorship and professional networks, which are often dominated by men. Workplace discrimination and unconscious bias affect hiring, promotions, and project assignments, while rigid work policies make it difficult to balance career and family responsibilities.
Philippa: Many women encounter difficulties in advancing to leadership roles due to bias and lack of mentorship opportunities.
3. What does International Women’s Day mean to you personally?
Leah: This day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the positive changes we have made in society. I’ll highlight the workplace as an example. There are more women in leadership positions than ever before, and it’s really inspiring to see so many talented women take on leadership roles which inspires me to strive to achieve. I think IPS has a great balance, with fantastic women taking on senior positions in this business, which encourage me to work hard and achieve my goals.
Philippa: Personally, it’s a moment to reflect on the resilience, strength, and contributions of women who have paved the way for future generations.
4. How can each of us contribute to gender equality in our everyday actions?
Leah: Each of us can play a role in promoting gender equality through small, everyday actions. This can start with being mindful of our own biases and making an effort to treat everyone with fairness and respect. In the workplace, this might mean advocating for equal opportunities, ensuring all voices are heard, and offering support or mentorship to women in their careers. At home, sharing responsibilities and encouraging children to value equality can help shape a more inclusive future. Supporting women-owned businesses, contributing to gender equality initiatives, and continuing to learn about these issues also make a difference.
Philippa:
– Support fair pay and promotion policies.
– Speak up when you notice gender-based discrimination or stereotypes.
– Help create opportunities for women in your field.
– Support diverse and equitable hiring practices.
5. What advice would you give to young women entering the workforce today?
Leah: Speak up and don’t give up. Your opinions, ideas, and experiences are valid, and you bring an incredible perspective to whatever role you undertake. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
Philippa: Don’t be afraid! Apply for the job, ask for the promotion, and step outside your comfort zone. Growth happens when you challenge yourself.
