What is the Next Generation ACA qualification?

The “Next Generation ACA” is the updated version of the ICAEW’s ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) qualification. The next-generation ACA qualification is being introduced to future-proof the chartered accountancy qualification and better equip trainees with the skills needed in a rapidly changing business world.

What is the Next Generation ACA?

The Next Generation ACA is the redesigned ACA qualification being rolled out by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). It represents the largest update to the ACA in around 30 years, aiming to combine technical knowledge with broader professional skills relevant for the future of work.

      Key Features

      Modernised syllabus and structure:
The qualification still consists of core business, finance and accountancy exams, but these have been refreshed and reduced to 14 modules.

      Three core components:
      • Business, finance & accountancy modules (exams)
      • Professional work experience (practical training)
      • Specialised Learning programme – a new, flexible learning platform where students complete mandatory and elective modules on emerging topics and skills tailored to their career path and employer needs.

      Focus on future-ready skills:
The Next Gen ACA embeds ethics, technology and sustainability throughout the syllabus, reflecting the increasing importance of these areas in business and accounting.

What’s new compared to the traditional ACA?

      • Greater emphasis on technology, sustainability and ethics across all levels of study.
      • Specialised Learning units ensure students develop up-to-date, role-relevant skills.
      • A streamlined exam structure with some new case-study style assessments and additional focus on real-world skills.

      When it’s being introduced

Certificate Level: available from September 2025.
Professional Level: rolling out from March 2026.
Advanced Level: expected around July 2027.

Existing students registered before mid-2025 can continue under the old ACA pathway or transition, depending on their progress and timing.

      In summary

The Next Generation ACA is the next generation version of the ACA qualification, a refreshed, forward-looking professional accountancy qualification launched by ICAEW that integrates contemporary business needs such as technology, ethics and sustainability with the traditional rigour of chartered accountancy training.
